Whole30: I Give Up

Blissful Mama asked how I knew that I have trouble burning fat as fuel?

Here's how I know. I was feeling tired and run down all the time on this low carb diet, even eating sweet potatoes and fruit. I was cranky and irritable. The thought of ever having a second child sounded utterly impossible. I wasn't enjoying my own child. Work frustrations enraged me. After three days off from exercise, my legs still felt tired going up the stairs to the subway.

None of these are normal for me.

After dinner, with a piece of bagel and cream cgeese at both lunch and dinner (not an ideal choice, but I was treating myself after all the suffering), I'm suddenly a happy mother and human again.

Phew!

I can't live like that. It's not worth it. There has to be a better way.

For now, my goal is to simply try to eat healthy. Which means some whole grains with my generally low-ish carb diet. And enjoying my child and my life. That has to be the priority.

Relieved that I am enjoying her again.

  1. I have a few friends who did the Paleo diet and described feeling just as you did - just run down and miserable. I say bring on the carbs!

  2. I am sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. Pleased you are feeling better though. It does prove that thee is no one size fits all as far diet is concerned - had exactly the opposite effect on me - though I think it is probably just wheat. Something to look out for though is how you feel over the next couple of days. I found with wheat that I am fine when I eat it - I love bread and butter and the sugar rush from eating is great - but the next day my energy is really low and i feel rubbish! Hope that doesn't happen to you x

  3. I can't function without carbs- I've tried. It was awful. I think healthy eating is the way to go- and it includes carbs.

  4. I have found giving up carbs difficult, the first week or so can be very difficult (why I start eating them again I have no idea). It can take a week or two for your body to adjust to the different way of eating and start using fat instead of carbs, for some it can take longer.
Both fruit and sweet potatoes have a lot of fructose in them, not the same thing so I don't think you could use that as a reason. Are you sensitive to fructose?
But if as someone above said, not all ways of eating are for everyone.
